Bulbocavernosus Muscle
Definition
The bulbocavernosus (also spelled bulbospongiosus) is a muscle that surrounds the bulb of the penis and the urethra in men. It assists in emptying the urethra after urination and contributes to the expulsion of semen during ejaculation. It also plays a role in maintaining engorgement of the glans and supporting erectile rigidity.
Why It Matters
Because the bulbocavernosus is one of the muscles activated during pelvic floor (Kegel) exercises, training that improves its strength and coordination can support better erectile firmness and ejaculatory control in some men. It is one of the primary muscles targeted in male pelvic floor rehabilitation.
Examples
- The rhythmic contractions of orgasm involve the bulbocavernosus.
- Stopping the flow of urine mid-stream recruits this muscle (among others).
- Clinical pelvic floor programs for erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation specifically train the bulbocavernosus and related muscles.
